Why I Am Afraid of Opossums: A Personal Reflection

Opossums are often misunderstood creatures. While many people find them intriguing or even endearing, I can't help but feel a sense of dread whenever I encounter one. My fear of opossums is not rooted in any singular traumatic event but is instead a culmination of various factors that have shaped my perception of these unique marsupials.

Let’s be honest, opossums aren't the most aesthetically pleasing animals. With their beady eyes, long snouts, and bare tails, they can appear somewhat unsettling. For someone who has a natural aversion to certain animals, the sight of an opossum can provoke an immediate sense of discomfort. Their pinkish skin and sharp teeth, which they often display when threatened, only add to this unease.

Opossums are known for their defensive tactics, which include playing dead when they feel threatened. While this may be an effective survival strategy, witnessing this behavior can be quite alarming. The first time I saw an opossum "playing possum," I thought it was genuinely sick or injured, which triggered a wave of panic. The unpredictability of their behavior, whether scurrying away or pretending to be lifeless can leave me feeling anxious in their presence.Growing up, I was often exposed to stories and media that portrayed opossums in a negative light. They were depicted as pests or harbingers of disease, reinforcing a narrative that made them seem dangerous. This cultural conditioning has played a significant role in shaping my fear, as I internalized these messages without ever questioning their validity.

While opossums are generally harmless to humans, they can carry parasites and diseases, such as leptospirosis and salmonella. The thought of encountering an opossum and potentially contracting something unpleasant is enough to make me uneasy. This fear is compounded by the fact that opossums often rummage through garbage and are associated with urban environments, making them seem like a health risk.

Opossums are nocturnal creatures, which means they are most active at night. This nocturnal lifestyle means I might unexpectedly encounter one while taking out the trash or walking at dusk. The sudden appearance of an opossum can send my heart racing, as I’m taken aback by their unexpected presence. The adrenaline rush from these surprise encounters only heightens my fear.

My fear of opossums is a blend of their appearance, behavior, cultural perceptions, health concerns, and the element of surprise. While I understand that they play an important role in the ecosystem, my instincts tell me to keep my distance. Fear, after all, is often rooted in the unknown, and for me, the opossum remains an enigmatic and unsettling creature. I may never fully overcome my fear, but acknowledging it allows me to navigate my encounters with a bit more awareness and perhaps a little less dread.

Finding God Through Disk Golf

On our farm, we have horses, cats, a garden and a disk golf course . I wanted to find a way to exercise, but also have fun, so I looked into disk golf and really enjoyed it, and our disk golf course has as taking off.

Disc golf, a sport that combines the precision of golf with the fun of throwing discs, offers more than just a recreational activity. It serves as a perfect metaphor for the Christian journey, filled with lessons about faith, perseverance, and community. Here’s how the elements of disc golf can mirror our spiritual walk.

*The Course of Life

Just like a disc golf course, life has its fair share of obstacles—trees, water hazards, and uneven terrain. Each hole represents different challenges we face. In the same way that we strategize our throws to navigate the course, we must also seek God’s guidance to navigate the complexities of life.

The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” When we rely on God, He helps us find the best path through our own unique courses.

*The Throw of Faith

In disc golf, each throw requires intention and focus. We must assess our position, the wind, and the distance to the basket. Similarly, our faith journey requires us to make intentional decisions based on our understanding of God’s Word. Every throw can be seen as a step of faith—sometimes we throw with confidence, while other times we may stumble. Hebrews 11:1 teaches us that “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Just as we cannot see the outcome of our throw until the disc lands, we must trust in God’s plan, even when we can’t see the end result.

*The Community of Players

Disc golf is often played in groups, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. This mirrors the Christian life, where fellowship with other believers strengthens our faith. Just as players encourage one another on the course, we too should support and uplift each other in our spiritual journeys. In Hebrews 10:24-25, we are reminded, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.” The shared experience of playing together can deepen our connections and remind us of our shared purpose in Christ.

*The Importance of Perseverance

Every disc golfer knows that not every throw goes as planned. There are missed shots, unexpected turns, and sometimes, the disc may land far from the target. This unpredictability mirrors the struggles we face in faith. Yet, perseverance is key. James 1:2-4 encourages us to “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” Just as we learn from our mistakes on the course, our spiritual growth often comes through adversity.

*The Goal: Eternal Life

Ultimately, the objective of disc golf is to reach the basket, just as our ultimate goal in life is to seek a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Each throw brings us closer to that goal, and every challenge we overcome strengthens our resolve. In Philippians 3:14, Paul writes, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” This perspective encourages us to keep striving, knowing that our efforts are not in vain.

Disc golf is more than just a game; it’s a reflection of the Christian journey. Each throw teaches us about faith, community, perseverance, and the pursuit of our ultimate goal. So, the next time you step onto the course, consider how each aspect of the game can inspire you in your walk with Christ. Embrace the journey, trust in God’s guidance, and enjoy the game!

And So It Begins

A Journey of Growth and Family

As summer fades into fall, the air is filled with excitement and a touch of nostalgia. For Alex, this new season marks the beginning of an incredible journey at the University of Louisville. With dreams in his heart and a backpack filled with books, he steps onto campus, ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that await him. The vibrant atmosphere of the university, with its rich history and spirited community, promises to be a backdrop for personal growth, lifelong friendships, and unforgettable experiences.

Meanwhile, Landon is carving out a new chapter of his own at Morehead State University. Nestled in the picturesque hills of Kentucky, he’s not just a student; he’s also a new apartment dweller, relishing the independence that comes with having his own space. The thrill of decorating his apartment, hosting friends, and creating a cozy sanctuary is a testament to his growth and newfound responsibilities.

But life isn’t just about academics and apartment living. I get to wear another title that fills my heart with joy: grandfather. My two precious granddaughters, Izzy and Lilly, bring light and laughter into my life. Whether it's reading bedtime stories, playing in the park, or simply enjoying the warmth of family gatherings, I treasures every moment spent with these little ones. They remind me of the beauty of life and the importance of family bonds.

My pride extends to my son, Brady, who has embarked on his own journey of love and commitment. Now married to the wonderful Katie, they’re building a life together filled with hope, dreams, and the shared joy of family. I watch with pride as Brady navigates the responsibilities of adulthood, knowing that his mom and I raised a son who values love, family, and hard work.

As Alex and Landon embark on their respective paths, the love they share as brothers remains a strong anchor. They support each other through the trials and triumphs, celebrating each achievement and offering a listening ear during challenging times. Their bond is a reminder that family is not just about blood but about the connections and memories created over time.

In this season of change, Alex and Landon are not just focusing on their individual journeys; they’re also nurturing the roots of their family tree. With Brady and Katie having their own family, the legacy continues to grow. Each generation brings new stories, and the laughter of Izzy and Lilly will echo through their lives, weaving a rich tapestry of love and connection.

As the leaves start to turn and the world around them changes, Alex and Landon stand at the forefront of their new adventures. With the strength of family behind them, they are ready to embrace whatever comes next. Whether it's the pursuit of knowledge, the joy of new beginnings, or the simple pleasure of being together, their journey is just beginning.

Here’s to new chapters, cherished moments, and the love that binds us all together.
