Fireside Chats: Thoughts From The Desk Of A Geek

Play Us A Song You’re The Piano Man

There’s something about the song Piano Man by Billy Joel that feels like stepping into a room full of stories. A bar full of ordinary people each carrying burdens, dreams, regrets, and hopes. The piano man sits there, not just playing music, but holding space for everyone in the room.

And if you think about it, that’s a lot like family.

Every family gathering is its own kind of “Piano Man” moment. There’s laughter, old stories retold a hundred times, quiet tensions, inside jokes, and memories that shape who we are. Some moments are joyful. Others are complicated. But all of them matter. Billy Joel’s song reminds us that every person has a story. The bartender, the businessman, the lonely man at the bar they all just want to be seen, known, and understood. That’s a deeply biblical truth.

Jesus lived this out every day.

He sat with people others overlooked. He listened. He noticed. He cared. Whether it was a tax collector, a fisherman, or a broken sinner, Jesus treated each person like their story mattered because it did. When you think about your family memories, you may feel a mix of emotions. Maybe there are warm moments holidays, laughter, and late night talks. Or maybe there are also hurts, misunderstandings, or people you miss.

God meets us in all of it. Just like the piano man plays a song that brings people together for a moment, God weaves together the stories of our lives even the messy parts into something meaningful. He invites us to love our families not because they’re perfect, but because He is working through them.

And here’s the challenge. Be the “piano man” in your family. Be the one who listens. Be the one who brings peace.

Be the one who reminds others through kindness and grace that they are not alone. You don’t need a piano to do that. Just a willing heart.
