The 900
Tony Hawk's "900" trick was a 2.5 spin in the air that he landed at the 1999 X Games in San Francisco, California. It was the first successful 900 in competition, and it cemented Hawk's place in pop culture. The trick was so groundbreaking that it's considered to have transformed skateboarding from a hobby into a global sport.
It wasn’t easy. Tony tried again and again, falling multiple times. Each failure looked painful, frustrating, and exhausting. But he kept getting back up. Finally, on his 12th attempt, he landed it. The crowd erupted because they knew they had just witnessed something historic. His perseverance reminds us of an important truth about our faith.
Life often feels like Tony Hawk attempting the 900. We try to do the right thing, follow God, overcome temptation, or accomplish something meaningful but sometimes we fall. The Bible never promises that we won’t struggle. But it does promise that God strengthens us when we keep trusting Him. Just like Tony Hawk didn’t quit after falling, God encourages us not to quit when we face challenges. Faith often looks like getting back up one more time. Landing the 900 required courage. Tony had to launch himself into the air and trust that his preparation and skill would carry him through.
Sometimes God calls us to take steps that feel scary trusting Him with our future, forgiving someone who hurt us, or stepping into a new opportunity. Like a skater leaving the ramp, we move forward believing that God is faithful to guide us. When Tony Hawk landed the 900, it changed skateboarding history. But the victory wasn’t just the trickit was the persistence that led up to it.
In the same way, God values our growth and perseverance, not just our victories. Every time we choose faith instead of fear, kindness instead of anger, or obedience instead of temptation, we’re growing into the people God created us to be.
